La última Panther Ostwallturm en Polonia (2001)

A finales de 1943 se comenzó a instalar torretas de Panther en fortificaciones fijas, alguna de ellas fueron torres de Panther de serie pero la mayoría fueron construidas a propósito. La cúpula del jefe del carro fue sustituida por una plana y el techo de la torre fue reforzado con un blindaje extra de 40 mm de espesor de modo que podía resistir un impacto directo de un proyectil de artillería de 150 mm. A finales de febrero de 1944 el fabricante de blindaje Dortmund HoerderHüttenverein tenía finalizadas 112 torres de este tipo. Se realizó otro pedido a Ruhrstahl para la fabricación de otras 155 torretas ostwallturm que deberían estar terminadas en agosto de 1944. Las torres eran montadas como unidades funcionales en Demag-Falkanse y a finales de mayo de 1944 había disponibles 98 de ellas con la intención de continuar con la producción al ritmo de 15 al mes.

El 10 de septiembre de 2001 se descubrió cerca de la localidad de Szczecin una Panther Ostwallturm en los trabajos para la autopista Szczecin – Poznan. Primero se encontraron los trabajadores con el cañón y se pensó que se trataba de un PzKpfw V Panther. Para evitar posibles accidentes se cortó el tráfico ya que se hallaron multitud de proyectiles de artillería en los alrededores y en el interior de la torre. Bajo la torre se pensó que se encontraría el carro de combate pero solo se encontraron restos de una estructura de hormigón y una compuesta de troncos de madera. Tras la aparición de la noticia se sucedieron las propuestas e incluso se llegaron a ofrecer 20.000 marcos por ella desde Alemania.

Sin embargo en ella también habían puestos sus ojos diversos museos de Szczecin que propusieron la instalación de la torreta como monumento en su ubicación original. Otro de las propuestas más interesantes fue la del museo militar de Lubuské que puso sobre la mesa la fabricación en superficie de una réplica exacta del Panther Ostwallturm y actualmente se encuentra en la entrada de la fortaleza de Gerstfeldhohe.
