 Historia del U-122

 

El U-122 era un submarino del Tipo IXB ordenado el 15 de diciembre de 1937 y comisionado el 30 de marzo de 1940 (Korvkpt. Hans-Günther Looff). Desde esa fecha hasta junino estuvo encuadrado en 2.U-Flottille, Wilhelmshaven Ausbildungsboot y como Frontboot. Realizó cuatro patrullas en la que logró hundir un buque británico, el SS Empire Conveyor, un mercante de vapor de 5.911 toneladas.

El 16 de mayo de 1940 zarpó en su primera patrulla rumbo a Noruega, como submarino de transporte. El destino era Trondheim y su carga un cañón antiaéreo de 8,8 cm con municiones, bombas, 90 metros cúbicos (unos 750 barriles) de combustible de aviación y aceite de motor. Tres días más tarde logró alcanzar su objetivo sin mayores contratiempos. El 21 de mayo volvió hacerse a la mar regresando tan sólo tres días más tarde a la base de Wilhelmshaven. Ese mismo día volvió a zarpar pero regresó el día 25 completando su tercera patrulla. Durante esta patrulla se topó con un submarino enemigo pero ninguno de los dos atacó.

El 13 de junio de 1940 el U-122 se hizo a la mar en su cuarta patrulla para operar en el Atlántico. Siete días más tarde logró hundir al SS Empire Conveyor, al oeste del paso de Three, en las islas Hebridas. Desde el 21 de junio no se tuvo más noticias del submarino y no se sabe las causas a ciencia cierta sobre su desaparición. Según una investigación realizada por FDS/NHB en diciembre de 1985, existe la posibilidad de que este barco se haya perdido debido a una colisión submarina con el buque cisterna de vapor británico  SS San Filipe en el 22 de junio en la posición 50.47N, 08.48W o por cargas de profundidad de la corbeta británica HMS Arabis el 23 de junio en la posición 49.21N, 08.47W. Pero la falta de detalles de ambos casos impide una evaluación adecuada. No hubo supervivientes, 48 muertos.

U-122 was a Type IXB submarine ordered on 15 December 1937 and commissioned on 30 March 1940 (Korvkpt. Hans-Günther Looff). He carried out four patrols in which he managed to sink a British ship, the SS Empire Conveyor, a 5,911-ton steam merchant.

On May 16, 1940, she set sail on her first patrol towards Norway, as a transport submarine. The destination was Trondheim and its cargo was an 8.8 cm anti-aircraft gun with ammunition, bombs, 90 cubic meters (about 750 barrels) of aviation fuel and motor oil. Three days later he managed to reach his goal without major setbacks. On May 21 he went to sea again, returning just three days later to the base in Wilhelmshaven. That same day he set sail again but returned on the 25th completing his third patrol. During this patrol he encountered an enemy submarine but neither attacked.

On June 13, 1940, U-122 put to sea on her fourth patrol to operate in the Atlantic. Seven days later he managed to sink the SS Empire Conveyor, west of the Three Pass, in the Hebrides Islands. Since June 21, there has been no further news of the submarine and the exact causes of its disappearance are not known. According to an investigation by FDS/NHB in December 1985, there is a possibility that this ship was lost due to an underwater collision with the British steam tanker SS San Filipe on 22 June at position 50.47N, 08.48 W or by depth charges from the British corvette HMS Arabis on 23 June in position 49.21N, 08.47W. But the lack of details in both cases prevents a proper evaluation. There were no survivors, 48 ​​dead.
