The convoy sailed from New York on 5 and was discovered by the U-130 on 12 in the afternoon it began to follow him waiting for the other submarines. However, the U-130 was located and sunk that night lost contact with the convoy until 14. The group of U-513 (Unverzagt) was joined in a line Wohlgemut Group west of the Azores. A third group, Tümmler, joined him sailing 1500 miles to intercept the convoy. Despite the amount of U-boat involved, at least 6 of them kept in touch with the convoy, good weather and lack of escort aircraft managed to sink only 4 UGS6 freighters, their escorts had managed to keep at bay the Gray Wolves.

Some of the members of U-513 group formed a new group, Group Seeräuber and headed south to the waiting convoy RS3. The convoy was spotted last day 28 and two days of operations against it sank three of their carriers, but the U-513 did not yield any successful action. On 14 April, and started the journey back to their base, rescued several survivors of U-526, which had been sunk after colliding with a British mine.

Immediately began the attack on U-Boot and despite its fierce anti-aircraft defense had two impacts on the German submarine sinking bow.

His crew managed to save only 20 men remaining in the first instance to drift in the water. Five hours later the USS Barnegat reached the point of sinking only 7 rescuing survivors, including their commander, KL Friedrich Guggenberger, 46 crew members were killed in action.
During his service did the sinking of 6 carriers, all merchant steam, with a record 29,940 tons total all with torpedoes (two of them during the first patrol and the rest in his last patrol). Also managed to damage two other boats.
