Panzer IV “Wirbelwind”

English version

For the new design is chosen Flakpanzer a turret closed however was not possible as the smoke from the gun itself hinder the shot. The Flakpanzer IV "Wirbelwind" (Whirlwind) riding a quad 20mm cannon protected by an octagonal turret open top with a shield of 16 mm thick. The system was satisfactory providing power and impressive volume of fire, the system was introduced in December 1943. The first conversions were made on PzKpfw IV came from the front with damage to be repaired, the original turret was removed and in its place He is installing the the "Wirbelwind"

The ability of rotation of the turret was 60 per second but as the race progressed 20 mm cannons were not enough to bring down Allied aircraft. However, the system of a quadruple assembly was devastating against infantry and lightly armored targets. Production began in mid-1944 and reached only 140 complete copies (86 of them reconstructed from PzKpfw IV damaged in the front) until the end of the war.
