Los rezagados de Villeneuve-Loubet
El 14 de agosto de 1944 el 1º Special Service Force o Devil's Brigade fue enviada al sur de Francia durante la Operación Dragoon, la invasión del sur de Francia. Desembarcaron en Port Cros y Îles d'Hyères, en la primera localización mantuvieron una batalla con la fuerza de ocupación alemana dónde capturaron 5 bunkers sufriendo 9 bajas entre sus filas. Durante su periodo de actuación los 1.800 hombres de esta unidad especial se estima que causó alrededor de 12.000 bajas al enemigo capturando a otros 7.000 soldados alemanes.
El 26 de agosto de 1944 las tropas alemanas destacadas en Villeneuve-Loubet mantenían su tensa rutina ya que los aliados habían puesto su píe en el sur del país, nada hacía presumir lo que se les avecinaba. En un corto pero intenso combate los 14 soldados alemanes (en la primera imagen) cayeron en una emboscada preparada por los hombres del Devil's Brigada. Tras la cruenta lucha los soldados aliados abandonaron el lugar y fue la población local la que se encargó de enterar aquellos 14 soldados alemanes en una fosa común sin marcar el lugar.
La fosa fue redescubierta en el año 2006 y en ella se hallaron los restos de estos soldados alemanes que desaparecieron en Villeneuve-Loubet, cerca de Niza, hacía ya 62 años. Algunos de los soldados fueron identificados gracias a sus chapas identificativas encontrándose a sus familiares más cercanos. Poco después sus cuerpos fueron llevados a un cementerio militar alemán en Charente-Maritime dónde recibieron sepultura en el campo santo tras una ceremonia.

On August 14, 1944 1st Special Service Force, or Devil's Brigade was sent to southern France in Operation Dragoon, the invasion of southern France. The grave was rediscovered in 2006 and she found the remains of those German soldiers who disappeared in Villeneuve-Loubet, near Nice, was already 62 years. Some of the soldiers were identified by their badges identifying finding their closest relatives. Shortly after their bodies were taken to a German military cemetery in Charente-Maritime where were buried in the cemetery after a ceremony.
