B-24 “Little Beaver”

El “Little Beaver” era un B-24D-120-CO con número de serie 42-40984. Pertenecía a la 5º Air Force, 90th BG, 320th BS. Con el número de construcción 2165 fue apodado “Castor ansioso” con la ilustración en el morro de un indio y una bomba (nose art). Más tarde se le añadiría un tema de Moby Dick en la parte frontal del morro.

El aparato se estrelló poco después de despegar el 31 de agosto de 1943 cuando alcanzaba los 4.000 metros de altitud, cayendo por un acantilado. Con el impacto el avión se quemó y algunas bombas que transportaba estallaron dispersando sus restos por la zona.

Se realizaron intentos por recuperar los restos del lugar entre 1943 y 1945 pero fue considerado como muy complicado debido a lo escarpado del acantilado y la presencia de bombas aún sin estallar en el lugar del accidente. El aparato se encuentra actualmente dentro del Parque Nacional Varirata cerca de Sogeri al norte de Port Moresby.

The "Little Beaver" was a B-24D-120-CO serial number 42-40984. He belonged to the 5th Air Force, 90th BG, 320th BS. With the build number 2165 was nicknamed "Castor anxious" to the illustration on the nose of an Indian and a pump (nose art). Later he would add a theme of Moby Dick in the front of the nose.

The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff on August 31, 1943 when it reached an altitude of 4,000 meters, falling off a cliff. On impact the plane burned and exploded some bombs carrying scattering his remains in the area.

Attempts were made to recover the remains of the site between 1943 and 1945 but was considered very difficult because of the steepness of the cliff and the presence of unexploded bombs still on the scene. The device is currently within the National Park near Sogeri Varirata north of Port Moresby.
