Prien was selected by Dönitz to try to penetrate the base protected from the Royal Navy in Scapa Flow in Orkney. The raid was successful in torpedoing and sinking the battleship HMS Royal Oak 31,000 tons safely out of the set.

Prien sank 31 vessels adding to his record 194,103 tonnes remaining at sea just 18 months. The U-47 was declared missing on March 8, 1941 with all hands. 1 .- Fregattenkapitan Otto Kretschmer

Born in Heldau, Liegnitz on 1 May 1912 and commanded the U-23 and U-99. In total 56 ships sank and is, therefore, the best U-boat commander in the war with a tonnage of 313,611 tonnes final.

This is a remarkable achievement by itself as it went into the sea just 18 months, 17. March 1941, his U-99 was attacked by two British destroyers, HMS HMS VANOC and Walter. He had no time to dive and the submarine was sunk being taken prisoner along with his entire crew. Many other U-boat captains had served at sea longer, fighting the enemy, but none surpassed its record of tonnage sunk.
