ZiS-42, el semioruga soviético
Tras el fallido asalto alemán a la capital rusa se fue reactivando poco a poco el ritmo de producción de vehículos militares no blindados. La columna vertebral de ellos lo constituyeron el ZIS-5V y el ZIS-42, este último solía ser armado con una pieza antiaérea en su parte posterior de carga para proporcionar movilidad al cañón.
El diseño fue inspirado en diseños similares alemanes y franceses comenzando el programa a finales de los años 30. El resultado fue un diseño un tanto primitivo GAZ-60 y el ZiS-22, ambos basados en camiones civiles convencionales. En 1942 el ZiS fue combinado con una suspensión semioruga recibiendo el nombre de ZiS-42 (el número corresponde con el año del inicio de su producción). El vehículo pesaba 3 toneladas y tenía un motor de 73 hp que le proporcionaba una velocidad máxima de 45 Km/h
Cuando se le proporcionó un motor más potente y algo de protección en la parte frontal del vehículo recibió el nombre de ZiS-42M. De ambos tipos se completaron unos 6.000 vehículos hasta 1945, algunos de ellos armados con cañones anticarro de 25 o 37 mm. Sin embargo el vehículo resultó falto de potencia lo que unido a la ausencia de eje delantero le causaba dificultades en los tortuosos caminos soviéticos.

When given a more powerful engine and some protection in front of the vehicle was named ZIS-42M. Of both vehicles were completed around 6,000 until 1945, some of them armed with antitank guns of 25 or 37 mm.
