Experten alemanes: Kurt Ubben

Major Kurt Ubben

 
Nació el 18 de noviembre de 1911 en Dorstadt in Harz y se unió a la Kriegsmarine en 1931, en el barco escuela Gorch Foch. Cuatro años más tarde fue transferido a la Luftwaffe sirviendo en el Küstenjagdstaffel (Kiel) en 1938.

Cuando estalló la contienda ya tenía el grado de Oberfeldwebel y estaba destinado en el 5./JGr 186, unidad que estaba previsto que sirviese en el portaaviones Graf Zeppelín que por esas fechas se encontraba en los astilleros. Su primera victoria aérea la logró tras tomar parte en la campaña de Polonia, el 10 de mayo de 1940 derribó un caza holandés Fokker D.XXI. Después de la conquista de Noruega fue trasladado junto a su unidad (II./JGr 186 ) a Stavanger.

El 5 de  julio el II./JGr 186 fue absorbido por el III./JG 77 ya que el proyecto del portaaviones fue abandonado indefinidamente. Para el 22 del mismo mes Ubben fue nombrado Staffelkapitän del 8./JG 77 y enviado, a finales de año, junto a su Staffel, a la zona del Canal de La Mancha. Participó en la campaña de los Balcanes a principios de 1941 dónde derribó un caza Hurricane de la RAF sobre Lamia (Grecia) el 19 de abril. En el enfrentamiento su Bf 109 fue dañado por el fuego enemigo y tuvo que realizar un aterrizaje de emergencia detrás de las líneas enemigas. Todo hacía indicar que terminaría la guerra en un campo de prisioneros en Egipto o Inglaterra pero finalmente fue rescatado por un avión de enlace Fieseler Fi 156 Storch pilotado por un amigo de su unidad que fue en su busca.

Después de este incidente Ubben participó en muchas misiones de ataque a tierra contra la navegación aliada en las costas de Grecia y Creta. El 22 de mayo de 1941 el Oberleutnant Ubben y el Oberleutnant Wolf-Dietrich Huy (40 victorias) atacaron la Fuerza C de la Royal Navy entre las islas de Kythera y Antikythera. Ambos pilotos lograron sendos impactos directos sobre el acorazado británico HMS Warspite. Ubben también logró hundir un torpedero británico durante estas operaciones.

En junio se desencadenó la Operación Barbarrossa durante la cual logró sumar sus victorias número 20 y 21 el 25 de julio de 1941. Para el 4 de septiembre ya era acreedor de 32 victorias aéreas, 26 aviones destruidos en tierra y 15 carros de combate. Al día siguiente fue nombrado Gruppenkommandeur del III./JG 77, con el grado de Hauptmann. El 19 de octubre ya sumaba 50 victorias y el 9 de diciembre derribaba 4 aparatos soviéticos en la misma misión elevando su registro hasta las 61 victorias aéreas confirmadas. Cuando el III./JG 77 fue trasladado al norte de África, ya tenía en su haber 92 victorias aéreas . El 14 de enero de 1943 lograba su victoria número 100 y 101.

Liderando su Gruppe fue enviado a Rumania para participar en la protección aérea de los campos petrolíferos de Ploesti de los ataques aliados. Con el rango de Major fue nombrado Kommodore del JG 2 el 10 de marzo de 1944 y destinado a Francia. Ubben llegaba a este puesto para sustituir al Oberstleutnant Egon Mayer (102 victorias) que murió en acción el 2 de marzo de 1944. El 27 de abril entabló combate contra cazas de la USAAF cerca de Fere-en-Tardenois, en el combate su Fw 190 A-8/R2 (W.Nr. 680 113) fue alcanzado y tuvo que saltar en paracaídas. Sin embargo su paracaídas no se abrió, debido a la falta de altitud o a que estuviese mal abrochado, muriendo en la acción. Ubben logró 111 victorias en algo más de 500 misiones de combate y destruyó gran cantidad de material durante sus misiones de ataque al suelo.

After this incident Ubben participated in many ground attack missions against Allied shipping off the coast of Greece and Crete. On May 22, 1941 Oberleutnant Ubben and Oberleutnant Wolf-Dietrich Huy (40 wins) Force C attacked the Royal Navy between the islands of Kythera and Antikythera.
