Para cubrir las necesidades de las colonias se inició un programa de carros de combate en 1926 y debería complementar al Renault D2. En un intento de mejorar las prestaciones de movilidad y autonomía se redujo el blindaje inicialmente proyectado.

El proyecto se inició sobre el chasis de un Renault D1 comenzando su estudio en 1930 dilatándose en el tiempo hasta abril de 1932 cuando apareció el único ejemplar construido. Tenía  una tripulación de 3 hombres y una longitud de 5 metros (2´30 de alto y 2´13 de ancho) con un peso de 10´1 toneladas alcanzaba una velocidad de 32 Km/h en carretera para una autonomía de 150 Km. Disponía de un blindaje máximo de 22 mm y un armamento de un cañón de 47 mm. Viendo sus características, blindaje ligero, peso algo y velocidad escasa provocaron su abandono inmediato por parte de las autoridades francesas.
