English version

On May 25, 1940, Hitler wrote a letter to the Duce in which he made an assessment of their offensive in the west and set out a value judgments about their opponents:

"... As for the morale of our enemies, we can say the following:

1 .- The Dutch, have opposed a much stronger resistance than expected. Many of its units have fought bravely. However, they had no proper education or experience of the war.

2 .- The Belgian, the Belgian soldier has fought, in general, also with great value. His experience of war can be seen by far more than the Dutch.

3 .- The British, the British soldier has been preserved as it existed during the Great War. Very brave and tenacious on defense, unskilled in the attack and sent miserably.

4 .- The French, marked differences appear in the French when evaluating its military capabilities. Very bad units alongside other excellent. Overall, the quality difference between active divisions and reserve is outstanding.

For the French, Dutch and Belgians is the fact that they know they fight in vain for purposes unrelated to their true interests. Their morale is greatly affected when they realize that as long as they can, the British try to book their units."
