Para marzo de 1943 el Inspector General de las Panzertruppen, Guderian, ordenó que un 4% de la producción mensual del Panther fueran concluida sin añadir la torreta recibiendo en su lugar las herramientas adecuadas para su misión de recuperación.

El diseño del nuevo vehículo recayó sobre MAN que deberían entregar 10 para la ofensiva de Kursk. El bastidor elegido fue el Panther Ausf D y 12 de ellos fueron terminados sin torreta. En mayo del mismo año Henschel entró en el contrato, utilizando el nuevo bastidor Ausf A y debiendo terminar 70 vehículos .

El conjunto disponía de tanques de combustible más grandes, cambio de configuración en la distribución de los tripulantes, un cañón de 20 mm con escudo blindado en la parte frontal para su autodefensa, cabestrantes, sistemas de poleas, cables de arrastre adicionales, bomba hidráulica de enfriamiento por aceite, etc. El sistema en su conjunto tenía una capacidad para una carga de 40 toneladas de peso.

By March 1943 the Inspector General of Panzertruppe, Guderian, ordered that 4% of the monthly production of the Panther were completed without adding the turret instead getting the right tools for the recovery mission.

The design of the new vehicle fell on MAN that should deliver 10 to the Kursk offensive. The frame chosen was the Panther Ausf D and 12 were terminated without turret. In May of that year entered into the contract Henschel, using the new frame Ausf A and must complete 70 vehicles.

The available set of larger fuel tanks, configuration change in the distribution of the crew, a 20 mm gun with armored shield on the front for self-defense, winches, pulley systems, additional warps, hydraulic pump cooling or oil. The whole system had a capacity for a load of 40 tons.
